Henna FAQ

What is henna? Is it safe?

Henna is a natural, plant-based dye that has been used to ornament human skin for centuries. Henna is perfectly safe and can even be used on children and pregnant women. Henna is mixed using the powdered leaves of the henna plant, sugar, lemon juice and essential oils.

How long does henna last?

The decorative stains left by henna are called mehndi. They generally last between 5 and 14 days depending on environmental factors. Things like skin tone and consistency, local humidity and where the henna is applied will all affect how long the mehndi lasts. For a rich, dark mehndi that lasts for more than a week, you’ll want to apply your designs to the hands or feet and leave the paste on for at least 8 hours and up to 12.

How do I prepare to get mehndi?

The most important thing is to start with clean, dry skin. Once the henna paste is applied, you’ll want to avoid getting the area wet for 24-48 hours, so it’s a good idea to shower beforehand. For the best results, you’ll want to leave the paste on 4-12 hours. You can sleep in henna, and wearing it overnight is a good way to get a strong stain. Wear clothes that are comfortable and can get dirty. Though I make every effort not to stain clothes, it sometimes happens.

What will my final mehndi look like?

When looking at henna online, you’ll see a wide range of colors from almost black to bright orange. This is because mehndi changes as it is exposed to air. “Black henna” is unsafe and unnatural. Real henna ends up a beautiful ocher color. When the paste is applied, the henna looks very dark. After removing the paste, the mehndi is a bright orange color. This will change over the course of the next 24 hours as the henna is oxidized by exposure to air. Henna Stages

How can I make my mehndi last longer?

There are a few ways to ensure that your mehndi lasts as long as possible. First, leave the paste on as long as you possibly can. This will dramatically effect the lifespan of your mehndi. One way to keep the paste on longer is to cover it with medical tape or gauze. This will also protect your clothing, furniture and bedding. Once you remove the tape/gauze, allow the paste to flake off on it’s own. DO NOT remove the paste with water. This can ruin all the hard work and waiting you’ve done! If you need to remove the paste faster, rub it off with olive oil or alcohol. Next, avoid getting mehndi wet for at least 48 hours. This may mean covering it with petroleum jelly or olive oil when showering. After 48 hours, your mehndi will be set, and you can wash normally, but continuing to protect the area with a waterproof barrier will help the design last a little longer.

What does it cost to get mehndi?

Because I work with each client on an individual basis, I don’t have set prices for henna, but I can give you a general idea of prices.
